What is it?

ICSI is a laboratory technique used alongside IVF, where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg using a fine needle, rather than allowing fertilisation to happen naturally in a dish.

Who may benefit?

  • •Couples with low sperm count, motility or abnormal morphology
  • •Previous IVF cycles with unexpectedly low or failed fertilisation
  • •Sperm retrieved surgically (e.g. in cases of obstruction)
  • •Use of frozen sperm or eggs
  • •Certain cases involving PGT

When is it considered?

ICSI is generally recommended when sperm-related factors make conventional fertilisation less likely to succeed, or when fertilisation history from a prior cycle suggests it may help.

How It Works

The treatment journey.

01

Egg & Sperm Preparation

Retrieved eggs and a prepared sperm sample are readied in the laboratory.

02

Sperm Injection

An embryologist injects a single selected sperm directly into each mature egg.

03

Embryo Development

Fertilised eggs are cultured and monitored over the following days.

04

Embryo Transfer

As with standard IVF, a selected embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Preparation

ICSI follows the same stimulation and egg-retrieval process as IVF; the difference is in the laboratory fertilisation step.

During Treatment

The injection procedure happens in the laboratory and does not involve any additional steps for the patient beyond standard IVF.

Afterwards

Recovery and follow-up mirror a standard IVF cycle.

Possible risks & limitations

ICSI carries similar considerations to IVF; not every injected egg fertilises or develops into a usable embryo, and your embryologist will discuss outcomes at each stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

ICSI isn't universally "better" — it is used when there's a specific indication, such as male-factor infertility. Your doctor will explain if and why it's recommended for you.
